Alexi's Cafe has taken over the spot that used to be the On 16th Cafe. It seems Alexi's managed to get the real Greek flavor, but without the roaming goats and second-hand smoke of actually going to Greece.
I dropped in recently for a gyro. The meat was moist and flavorful, and the pita was warm and soft. The tzatziki sauce was just right. You have your choice of a few side orders. I went for cottage cheese instead of fries.
Alexi's also has a tasty mousaka, and watch out for the specials board. It's on the small side, so I missed out on a nice sampler platter that included stuffed grape leaves, on of my favorites. The prices here are also good. The gyro pita was $5.99.
I wouldn't mind a tastier variety of iced tea, but otherwise this is a great lunch spot. If you feel like something sweet, try the baklava. It's not one of my favorite desserts, but I just felt the need!
You'll also really like the Greek couple that owns Alexi's. I almost felt bad leaving them to go back to work.
